Independent Bias Audit of Criteria's Assessment Platform
New York City’s Automated Employment Decision Tools (AEDT) law establishes a set of process and transparency requirements for employers using A.I. based hiring tools.
Under the law, AEDT users will need to:
- Use an AEDT that has been independently audited for bias.
- Let candidates know that the AEDT is being used.
- Provide candidates with access to a summary of the Bias Audit results.
- Give candidates the opportunity to request an alternative selection process.
Criteria has been tracking the law’s progress and has actively engaged with the City on the law, including submitting expert testimony to the Committee responsible for drafting the law’s regulations. We support the City in promoting best-practice transparency requirements for AEDT users.

Independent auditing helps Criteria ensure that our selection system is free from unfair systems of bias. We use the results to guide the development of our assessment products.
In June 2023, an independent audit of Criteria's assessments was completed by Professor Richard Landers, PhD. This audit found no practically significant disparate impact against any gender, any US racial category, or against any combination of gender and US racial category.
